I realise that the Donald Rumsfeld quote is over-used, but it’s just so relevant to my particular industry, and no, I don’t deal in weapons of mass destruction, I work with promotional gifts, corporate clothing and personalised giveaways. BUT, it’s really common for clients to not have a clue about ‘what they don’t know’, beacause they don’t know what they don’t know, so they come to me seeking out promotional giveaways that they DO know about. And therein lies the issue. If you only ever seek out the things you already know about, you won’t be a leader or an originator of new creative things, you’ll simply be copying things that you’ve seen other people do.

I love it when I work with clients that give me a brief such as this, ‘my business needs to reach out to the XYZ sector, and we are looking for an original idea, something to really catch their attention, what do you suggest?’  I have been working with a client recently who supply replacement oil tanks, the sort of thing you see alongside factory units, or even in domestic dwellings for central heating oil. My clients idea was to hand out pens or plastic keyrings to their customers and potential customers as a way of ensuring they are remembered, these are all things that they knew about and had seen other busineses using, and then I showed them something they didn’t know about, these liquid filled keyrings.

These are lovely squigy things that we can fill with two different coloured liquids. The liquids don’t mix together, and create a wonderful effect, thats just so touchy feely, you simply can’t help squeezing the keyring, and of course, the outside is branded with your logo or message. The client loved the idea as it linked so well with their service offering, all we did was make the liquids look like two oils.  A great example of there being things you simply don’t know about, so how could you search for them? Luckily, they found my company RT Promotions, on the web, and we made sure they found about stuff they didn’t know about.
